is our cnn legal contributor who is watching the story as well. paul, as the police and officials try to find this man before he finds more agents -- he's already killed three and injured two, are the prosecutors trying to build a case so if and when they catch him and hopefully alive, they're ready to go in a prosecution and my guess is a death penalty prosecution? >> well, prosecutors are standing on the sidelines right now. i don't think they're actively involved. this is the police investigation. in terms of how a lawyer would look at the the situation and the lieutenant -- and i call him the lieutenant because he was in the military has to understand that his only way out is to voluntarily surrender. with law enforcement mounted against him. in the end if he gets into a firefighter he's going to wind up sked. . dead. a peaceful surrender can be arranged. that's the only way out at this point. >> that's why i want to ask this. he's a media junkie. he has contacted cnn. he knows people by name on this network. it is possible that he's watching the developments. he's gone undergroun
moll noling a hooting and fiery crash that left three dead and mangled cars everywhere. cnn spoke with a spokesman of the las vegas police department. >> approximately 4:20 this morning two vehicles were northbound las vegas boulevard at flamingo when one of the vehicles described as a black range rover sport fired shots into a second vehicle, a maserati, striking the driver and the passenger of that vehicle. it caused it to go out of control, continues through the intersection, striking a cab which subsequently catches on fire and then striking four additional vehicles. as a result three of the -- three of those occupants of the vehicles were transported for injuries, and the cab driver and the passenger were trapped inside the vehicle. at this time we have three confirmed deceased, two of those being the cab driver and the passenger, and the driver of the maserati. one of the occupants in the maserati was wounded from the shots. right now, what we're asking is that anyone that has information regarding this black range rover sport to contact the las vegas metropolitan police dep

others. he's still at large and police say he has access to multiple weapons and assault rifles. cnn's kyung lah is joining us from los angeles where the police chief is calling it extremely worry some and scare ree. what's the latest kyung? >> reporter: certainly scary for anyone connected to the police department in southern california. this is where today's shooting spree began but all of this, wolf, began earlier this week. the murder spree began on sunday with the double killing of a newly engaged couple, monica quan and keith lawrence, quan, the daughter of a retired lapd captain, the officer who represented christopher dorner in front of the police board that eventually fired him. dorner refers to quan's murder in his man guess stow. he writes, i never had the opportunity to have a family of my own. i'm terminating yours. self-preservation is no longer important to me. i do not fear death as i died long ago on january 2nd of '09, a date a few month after dorner was fired as a police officer. the lapd fanned out, launching 40 protection details throughout southern california. >
